Discouraging people’s beliefs that they can operate a vehicle could stop them from making the decision of drinking and driving. Intoxicated people lack reasonable judgment and feel confident when making decisions. Having the ability to convince drunk people that they are wrong, is nearly impossible. That being said, there needs to be a way to physically prevent drunks from driving. Janet Dewey-Kollen says that Mothers Against Drunk Driving are “determined to wipe out drunk driving in the U.S. within a generation.” They want to do this by adopting the ignition interlock system. They believe that this system has the potential to eliminate drunk driving nation-wide, if people become aware of its usefulness. This system would work because if a steering wheel can detect alcohol in someone’s blood, the ignition won’t allow the car to start. Using the system in every car would result in a tremendous decrease of drunk people on the roads. DUI Checkpoints points out that “law enforcement uses DUI checkpoints to catch drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.” DUI Checkpoints are useful, because it makes people scared to drink in the first place. People don't want to get caught being drunk on the roads, so if more DUI Checkpoints are established around the nation, it could greatly contribute to the decrease in drunk driving. These solutions are the best because there has to be a physical way of preventing drunks from driving. Convincing a drunk person not to drive is very difficult, so having cars with an interlock system can prevent the driving from happening.
